Listing A Cat You Have Found
Please be advised, WLCA no longer lists lost and found cats on Facebook. For more information on how you can help cats, please visit the Winnipeg Lost Cat Assistance website.
For cats who are in poor physical condition:
If the cat is in poor physical condition (e.g. injured, very thin, not walking properly, can't walk, lethargic, bleeding, missing a lot of fur with skin irritation, is blind (pupils don't constrict) or deaf (does not turn head to loud sounds), is lethargic, is drinking massive amounts of water, is scratching incessantly, has bloody diarrhea, cannot urinate), please DO NOT LIST THE CAT ANYWHERE.
Contact the Winnipeg Humane Society at 204-982-2021 Option 5 (11 am-6 pm M-F, 10:30 am-5 pm Sat, noon-5 Sun) or 204-982-2020 after hours until 10 pm OR Winnipeg Emergency Animal Hospital after 10 pm (204-452-9427) if the cat needs immediate medical care.
For deceased cats:
If you have found a DECEASED cat on public property in the city, please email 311@winnipeg.ca (or call 311) for pickup. You can also take the cat to the Winnipeg Humane Society or a nearby clinic. Please note, the city will NOT pick up from private properties. Cats on private property need to be transported to WHS or a clinic by a member of the public or homeowner, with permission.
For cats who appear healthy:
We recommend using PawBoost as your main lost and found resource as they keep your information completely anonymous. PawBoost does not require a Facebook account and they are completely free.
We recommend not listing your name, phone number or address in the comment field on any site you may be listing on. We also advise against advertising a reward. PawBoost provides a template for flyers in addition to a wide social media distribution.
For a Facebook-specific option, we recommend Winnipeg Missing and Found Cat Watch. Please be advised that unless you have taken steps to protect your identity or personal information, people will have unfettered contact through your post.
Please be sure to include the following information in your PawBoost submission:
- A good photo (clear, shows face and body markings)
- Location the cat was found (e.g. Inkster and Charles)
- The date the cat was found
- If the cat has a tattoo or microchip (do not disclose the actual numbers)
- If the cat is wearing a collar and tags (do not disclose the description or tag number)

Tips to get cats back home to their loved ones
- Pick the cat up and get them to safety (e.g. your home, a vet, a friend's home). If you can, please use a cat carrier to transport. Cats travelling loose in the care are a hazard. They have been known to escape vehicles only to be killed in traffic. If transporting loose, please close all windows and have the cat secured before you open the doors. Keep the cat separate from your own pets by sequestering them in a spare room or bathroom. Please ensure room windows and doors are closed prior to letting the cat out of the carrier.
- Check for an ear tattoo in the right ear. Some cats have vanity tattoos in the left ear as well. If you can read the tattoo, write it down to include in your WHS found report. If the cat has a city license tag, please call 311 or email 311@winnipeg.ca. If the cat has no visible ID, please get them into a carrier and off to a clinic or WHS to be scanned for a chip. If the cat has a tattoo you cannot read, try uploading a photo to WLCA on Facebook as we can often read them from a photo. If we can't, take the cat, in a carrier, to WHS or a clinic to have it read.
- Fill out the WHS FOUND animal report online. If you do not have access to a device or do not have Internet service, please call 204-982-2021 Option 5 and speak to an intake employee. If you get voicemail, please leave a message with your contact number.
- If you are considering giving the cat a home (or finding them one on your own) if no one claims the cat, request the Care-to-Adopt program through WHS. For only a small fee (under $40), you can have the cat spayed/neutered/vaccinated/dewormed and tattooed after a short hold period in your home. Ask WHS for details and current pricing. If the cat you have found already has a tattoo but no one comes forward, Care-to-Adopt will ensure the receive a health exam and booster vaccines for a very low price.
- Check online listings in your area and beyond to see if the cat matches a photo of a known missing cat.
- Check the Winnipeg Humane Society's Lost Cat Listings to see if there is a match:
- If you live outside of Winnipeg, notify your local animal control of the cat you've found.
- List the cat on your community's Facebook Page, if allowed. Most cats are found very close to home.
- Walk the area where the cat was found, knock on doors and check for posters on trees and poles.
- Put up "FOUND CAT" posters in the area. Be sure to leave out a detail only the family would know about (e.g. collar description, special marking, gender). Do not disclose permanent ID information as anyone with this information may try to use it as proof of ownership just because they saw it advertised. Any tattoo must be called in to WHS and needs to lead to the registered owner. WHS will sort out any inconsistent information.
